Face-Melting Chaos

I Am Morbid

It was as if the gates of the underworld unlatched and David Vincent himself said, “Hold my oxblood boots—I’ve got a show to play!” Emerging in a blaze of red light, knee-high studded glory, and denim decorated with leather lightning bolts, Vincent practically summoned a small earthquake with those throat-rattling growls of his. The hometown crowd welcomed I Am Morbid with a decibel levels competing with that at of MacDill AFB and made the pilots wonder if they should also be wearing earplugs.

Guitarists Bill Hudson and Richie Brown shredded so fast, I’m surprised they didn’t set their guitars on fire—though that might’ve only made the show more epic. Then there’s Pete Sandoval. At 61, he’s over here blasting, thrashing, and outplaying drummers half his age, like it’s just another Tuesday. If drumming were an Olympic sport, we’d already be crowning him the eternal gold medalist.

They tore through Morbid Angel classics from A through D, giving fans that sweet nostalgia we’ve been collectively pining for. The audience was a melting pot of metal mania, from local headbangers to someone who flew in all the way from Mexico City, presumably to experience the eardrum massacre in person. Turns out, it was worth every decibel.

This electrifying night kicked off the Devastation On The Nation tour in the best possible way—like a thousand demons marching into battle.
