Hell has a new King

Kerry King

The moment Kerry King stepped onto the stage at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, FL, the crowd exploded into a frenzy of pure metal mayhem chanting “SLAYER! SLAYER! SLAYER!” in the front row. The intensity never wavered, fueling a night that was dark, packed, and unapologetically loud (sorry, not sorry, Downtown St. Pete!). This energy never subsided, fueling King’s set as he delivered tracks from his debut solo album, From Hell I Rise. In the aftermath of the apparent demise of one of thrash metal’s ‘Big Four,’ King’s latest project stands as a bold statement, proving he remains a force to be reckoned with.

The evening’s sonic assault came courtesy of King’s formidable new lineup: drummer Paul Bostaph (Slayer), bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH), guitarist Phil Demmel (Machine Head), and vocalist Mark Osegueda (Death Angel). With raw intensity and unapologetic aggression, they brought From Hell I Rise to life on stage. Kerrang! was quick to lavish praise on the album, calling it “metal as f*ck” in a review that leaves no room for doubt.

As the set approached its finale, crowd favorites “Raining Blood” and “Black Magic” took the energy to explosive new heights. This set embodies metal in its purest form, as Kerry King absolutely proves his legacy is far from over.
